1) What is Morton’s syndrome or Morton’s neuroma?

Morton’s syndrome causes forefoot pain, often felt as a burning sensation under the sole of the foot and/or in certain toes.

This pain mainly occurs during prolonged walking (or not), running, or even while driving.

2) What causes Morton’s syndrome?

Morton’s neuroma may be caused by:

  • Compression of the digital nerve in the 2nd or 3rd intermetatarsal space (branches of the medial plantar nerve)
  • Repeated nerve irritation due to microtraumas (walking, running, etc.)
  • Wearing shoes that are too tight or with high heels

3) How is it diagnosed?

If you experience similar symptoms, consult your doctor. Through a medical history and clinical examination, the diagnosis can be confirmed.

In some cases, imaging may be requested to further support the diagnosis.

4) Morton’s syndrome: Is it serious?

This condition is generally not serious.
However, poor management of symptoms at the onset can lead to worsening pain and longer recovery times.

It should therefore be taken seriously from the start.

5) How is rehabilitation carried out?

When treated early, the prognosis for this syndrome is generally good. Treatment focuses on:

  • Physiotherapy:
    • Tissue relaxation
    • Muscle strengthening
    • Technical training (running, etc.)
    • Patient education about the condition
  • Possible use of orthotic insoles
  • Medical support: painkillers, or corticosteroid injections if needed

6) Is surgery an option?

Surgery is not a first-line option for this condition. It is only considered if initial treatment fails, or in cases of severe pain and functional impairment.

7) Can I continue training with Morton’s syndrome?

While a Morton’s neuroma does not always require stopping sports, it should be taken seriously from the start to prevent worsening of the condition.

It is important to discuss the best approach with your doctor and therapist, to adapt your activity and allow proper healing.

8) What can I do to speed up recovery?

To accelerate healing, follow the recommendations of your healthcare professionals as closely as possible.

Laziness or overzealousness will hinder your progress.

Conversely, discipline, consistency, perseverance, and a positive, proactive mindset will help you recover as quickly as possible!
