Kinésithérapie Maxillo-faciale

Oro-maxillofacial (OMF) physiotherapy

A physiotherapy specialty that focuses on patients with disorders related to the various functions of the face.

Its applications are wide-ranging: in cases of ENT pathologies (recurrent ear infections/sinusitis, certain types of tinnitus); in cases of pain or blockage of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), difficulties with chewing, migraines, or chronic neck pain may occur. Muscle release techniques can be performed to relieve these tensions and provide relief.

Who is this specialty for?

These various tensions can appear, for example, in patients suffering from:

- Stress;

- Bruxism (teeth grinding);

- Dysfunctional swallowing or chewing;

- Mouth breathing (for example, in cases of sleep apnea): patients who primarily breathe through the mouth create tension in the oral and cervical areas.

Post-operative rehabilitation

In post-operative rehabilitation following oral surgeries (tongue or tonsil operations), orthognathic surgery (jaw surgery), or maxillofacial trauma (facial fractures), physiotherapy aims to relieve pain through muscle release, restore full and functional mobility via movement-based rehabilitation, balance different functions (chewing, breathing, swallowing), and guide the patient throughout the recovery process.

OMF physiotherapy can also be used in the rehabilitation of functional disorders related to facial paralysis or after surgery for oro-facial tumors
